How to host a wicked surprise party: Part 1
So you want to host a surprise party? A surprise party can be the most fantatsic and memorable event that gets talked about leading into and often long after the event takes place. It's such a great way of showing someone how much you think they rock - because organisng one is damn hard work!
Two of the most important things to think about when you decide you want to organise a surprise party are 1. Why them? and 2. Why me?
Make sure that the person you are throwing the gig for will love and appreciate the gesture. Some people (like me), hate the thought of being surprised by a big crowd, and the enormous "SUUUUUUUURRPPIIIIIIIIIISE" greeting, can and has been known to make people do some very strange things like walk out, swear and get angry at the host... so think long and hard about whether your guest of honour is likely to love you or hate you for what you've done. Let's face it, if they're not going to love you for it... you're better off saving your energy for another great idea.
If you think there's a risk of upsetting them, an altenative is inviting a surprise guest, someone they would be really excited to see, but wouldn't think to invite themselves, or letting them know about the party, but taking on the organising and admin for them and keeping a few little elements like a slide show, speech or presentation about them as your component of surprise.
Secondly, think long and hard about whether you want to take on the responsibility of organising the party. Surprise parties involve a lot of deception, lots of organsing, lies and sneaking and scheming behind your loved-one's back. You will constantly be on alert and may require nerves of steel to pull it off, especially when forgetful relatives call the house to check the details of the she-bang.
Still keen? Good on you! Whilst I hate being the one who gets yelled at, I do love organising a good old surprise and can proudly say I've hosted a few without a hitch. Tune in next week for how to get started...
