Do you need to level the playing field when it comes to footy? Pop these definitions in your back pocket and you’ll never be short of conversation when it comes to NRL or AFL (…for those who do not know the difference between the two – please see NRL and AFL – suggest you do a bridging course by way of 3 minutes on both sites before attempting to use the terms below!)
-
NRL
EASY
- Try - The grounding of the ball by an attacking player in their opponents in goal area (4 points)
- Converting a Try - Kicking a goal following the scoring of a try ( 2 points)
-
- Dummy Half - The person behind the play the ball situation.
- Not to be confused with: Dummy - The pretence of passing or otherwise releasing the ball while still retaining possession of it.
-
SHOWING OFF
- 10-metre rule - Every time a player is tackled, all defenders, apart from a maximum of two markers, have to retreat 10 metres from the play-the-ball area.
-
AFL
EASY
- Behind - When the ball is kicked, handballed or otherwise taken over the line between the large goalpost and the smaller goalpost (1 point)
- Goal - A goal is awarded when the ball is kicked through the two large goal posts (6 points)
-
SLIGHTLY MORE TECHNICAL
- Free Kick - Awarded after a mark or after an infringement by an opposition player. The player awarded a free kick can stop and take a kick without being tackled.
- Mark - When a player catches the ball on the full after it has traveled at least 10 metres.
-
SHOWING OFF
- Ball! Usually yelled by spectators when an opposition player is tackled in possession of the ball.
