Green theme: host a kids’ environmental party

Green theme: host a kids’ environmental party

We can all be a little kinder to the environment if we try, and most kids are really switched on when it comes to protecting and preserving our planet. If your child is keen on the idea, how about throwing them a party with an environmental theme?

  • A green theme is best-suited to older primary-aged children, who understand basic environmental concepts and have learnt about them at school. Here are some fun activities and games for the party:
  • Plant seedlings

Each child plants their own seedling to take home and watch grow. All you need is potting mix, fast-growing seeds (such as dwarf beans), tiny terracotta or plastic pots with drainage holes, and tools such as small trowels and watering cans. Set the potting station up on a low children’s table and instruct them on how to go about planting their seed. Write each child’s name on their pot so they know which is theirs to take home. Instant party favour!
  • Do an environment quiz

Write a fun multiple choice quiz – the kids can do it in groups or as individuals. Include green facts covering the natural environment, animals, plastic bag use, renewable energy sources and more, but make the questions easy and appropriate for the children’s ages. You’ll find lots of questions and answers for your quiz on the sites of environmental groups (e.g. Clean Up Australia’s fact sheets). Have a prize such as a solar-powered torch or a tote made from recycled materials.
  • Play a recycled creation game

In the weeks before the party, collect lots of cardboard and plastic containers (clean and wash them thoroughly). On the party day, divide guests into teams and challenge them to create something crazy using the recycled materials (such as toilet paper rolls, newspaper, yogurt pots, corrugated cardboard). Ideas to get them started could be a silly outfit, spaceship, car etc. Don’t forget a selection of scissors and markers to decorate their creations, and offer help with cutting tricky materials like thick plastic or cardboard.
  • Have a swap-a-thon

A swap-a-thon is a fun way for kids to recycle their toys. Each child brings along a small toy of limited value that they no longer use or want. As they arrive at the party, each guest places their toy on a table. You label each toy with a number during the party, and then when it’s time to go home, each child gets to draw a number from a hat and take home the toy that matches it. If the toy doesn’t appeal, they get to pick again. Ensure you brief all parents about the swap-a-thon idea before the party so their child chooses something appropriate to bring – neither too old, dear to their heart, or special.
