Whether you’ve just embarked upon a new relationship or actively dating in the quest for the perfect partner, taking note of a little dating etiquette is certain to impress your potential life mate. Here are some classic do’s and don’ts of the dating world:
-
Date night DO’s
Do be a good listener:
There’s nothing worse than going out with someone who won’t shut up about themselves and their achievements! Be sure to direct genuine interest towards your date by asking them questions about their work, family and hobbies. But don’t pry into issues that are too personal, unless your date steers the conversation in that particular direction.
-
Do make an effort with your appearance:
This is a no-brainer – giving your outer appearance a boost does wonders for your inner confidence, especially when you’re going out with someone you feel a physical attraction towards. So treat yourself to that new outfit and a blow-dry … whatever makes you feel and look your best!
-
Do bring your manners:
Good old-fashioned manners will make a lasting impression upon your date – being polite will never go out of style and will score you plenty of brownie points, male or female. Generally, putting your date before yourself is a good rule of thumb – for example, many women feel special when the door is held open for them, or they are invited to order their meal first.
-
Do suggest an interactive date:
Together, decide upon a date activity that you’ll both enjoy. Having an interactive focus – such as going to a sporting match or doing a cooking class together – will make for less awkward moments, a greater feeling of relaxation, and a fun time overall!
-
Date night DON’Ts
Don’t get drunk:
There’s nothing attractive about someone who’s had way too much to drink, and while it may be tempting to down your first glass of wine in 10 minutes flat to help combat nerves, it won’t do you any favours in the long run. You want to remember the date, not end up slurring your words or falling asleep on your date’s shoulder … a sure-fire way to kill any potential for romance!
-
Don’t talk about your ex:
So many of us have battle scars from past relationships, and if your date is showing interest in your past by asking plenty of questions, you may be tempted to launch into a convoluted tale about your dreaded ex. Two words: zip it! Save the details for way further down the track, when your new relationship is much more established.
-
Don't have bad breath:
There’s nothing worse than leaning in for a first kiss after a great date, only to be repelled by a waft of nasty breath. Brush your teeth just before you leave the house to meet your date – and if you’re planning a sleepover, pop your toothbrush and paste in your handbag for fresh breath in the morning!
