How to make an anniversary party special

How to make an anniversary party special

With the divorce rate so high, celebrating marriages that have lasted the distance is even more special than ever! So if your parents (or grandparents) are approaching a significant anniversary, don’t let it go by without a party. They’ll love the thought, and the chance to relive the day they tied the knot many decades ago.

  • Here’s how to make it memorable:

*Get your parents/grandparents to provide a list of guests – a wedding anniversary celebration wouldn’t be complete without the original bridal party, if possible. If the anniversary couple aren’t in touch with the bridesmaids and groomsmen, offer to help track them down to see if they can make it. They will probably also wish to include plenty of family, plus their friends from days gone by.
  • *Without telling them, raid your parents’/grandparents’ cupboards to track down their wedding album – then you can create some kind of photographic tribute for the occasion to surprise them. If you know any of the bridal party, ask them for photos of the pair when they were a young carefree couple – there might be a few classics you could scan and then use to create a customised e-invite.
  • *Make sure you know the name of the wedding anniversary your parents are celebrating (it may also guide your gift choice) – here’s a rundown:
    • 20 years: China
    • 25 years: Silver
    • 30 years: Pearl
    • 35 years: Coral
    • 40 years: Ruby
    • 45 years: Sapphire
    • 50 years: Gold
    • 55 years: Emerald
    • 60 years: Diamond
  • *Organise a present from you and your siblings to honour the milestone – use the guide above for inspiration and try and make the gift something your mum and dad can keep forever. Think less practical, more sentimental!
  • *At the party, set out a blank hardcover journal so that each guest can spend time recording their best wishes and a special message for the anniversary couple. It’ll make a great memento of the occasion.
