Quick, Easy Finger Food

Whether you're hosting a gaggle of toddlers or a gang of school kids, easy finger food always proves a popular party staple.
Toddlers have no interest in food that is too fiddly or difficult to consume. For the little ones who are just mastering their eating technique, food which is easily held and eaten will find the warmest reception.
Similarly, for older children who are more preoccupied with the social goings-on of a party than savouring its culinary delights, snacks that can be eaten on the go are usually a winner.
The simplest options to prepare include small sandwiches (offer a variety of fillings for interest), fruit plates, or savoury platters - include yummy crackers, cheeses, vegie sticks, a selection of dips & dried fruit.
Savoury pastries and mini quiches can be made in advance, bought frozen from the supermarket, or pre-ordered from your local bakery or deli - just heat and serve on the day. For added interest, try pastizis, spring rolls (fried or fresh), fish cakes or dim sims with dipping sauce.
Some plates have been hits for decades and never lose favour with the kids, or their parents. A plate of cheerios with tomato sauce, shaped fairy bread, chicken nuggets, party pies or sausage rolls are all timeless winners, and can require next to no effort on your part.
Sweet or savoury muffins are also guaranteed to please, and sweet slices can be made and frozen weeks in advance, to be defrosted and enjoyed on the day. If the sun's out, fruit jellies will be a hit, or keep a stash of iceblocks in the freezer for the little ones to suck on.
Unfortunately, the modern reality is that many of us don't have the time to dedicate to these occasions that we'd like. If you're really stuck for time, the local supermarket or bakery offers all manner of treats these days - from pastries to lamingtons. The beauty of kids' parties is that simple, easy food is often the most well-received, so enjoy the opportunity to host a fun gathering without the complex three-course requirements.
