Your wedding countdown: a timeline checklist for planning your big day

Your wedding countdown: a timeline checklist for planning your big day

Even though you may have hundreds of ideas in your head about what kind of wedding you’d like to have, it can be tricky to work out where to begin.

  • Enter our wedding planner – we’ve devised this timeline to ensure you get everything organised in time to have the best day of your life!
  • 12 months before the day (or as soon as you get engaged if the date is less than a year away)

Plan an engagement party – use one of our engagement invites! This is an especially good idea if your families don’t know each other very well.
  • Once you’ve decided on the wedding date, view and book your ceremony and reception venues.
  • Meet with your celebrant/religious minister to confirm the date and style of ceremony you’d like to have.
  • Decide on your bridal party ,...
  • ASAP, start looking for your dream dress if you’re having an off-the-rack design, or book in a dressmaker if you’re having a made-to-measure gown.
  • 6-9 months before

Plan your wedding budget – our online budget calculator might be of use.
  • Write the guest list.
  • Decide on all your service providers, and book them in – provide any deposit required to secure each product or service. Consider any or all of the following:

    • Event coordinator
    • Florist
    • Caterer
    • Photographer
    • Videographer
    • Band/DJ or other entertainers
    • Musicians for ceremony and/or reception
    • Make-up artist
    • Hairdresser
    • Cake designer
    • Wedding cars
  • Decide on your honeymoon destination and book it.
  • Shop with your bridesmaids for their dresses.
  • Buy your accessories – underwear, veil, shoes, jewellery, hair accessories, purse, wrap.
  • Choose music and readings/poems for the ceremony.
  • Decide on your MC, as well as readers for the ceremony, and ask them if they are happy to play this part in your day.
  • 3 months before

Decide on the wording for your invitations and either have them printed or choose one of our wedding e-invites
  • Compile your wedding registry – either in the store on online. Lots of options here
  • Arrange the date for your ceremony rehearsal and/or rehearsal dinner if you’re having them, and notify your bridal party and families so they are available (usually held a week or less before the wedding).
  • Have a tasting of your reception menu and/or meet with the venue coordinator to decide on the meal choices and wine list.
  • Have a hair and make-up trial with your artist/s – and make sure you are happy with the result!
  • Order the wedding rings (yours and his), so they can be made in time.
  • Book the hotel for your wedding night.
  • Start having dance classes if you want to wow your guests with your bridal waltz!
  • 2 months before

Send out your invitations by traditional mail or email if using one of our stylish designs
  • Buy bridal party gifts – bridesmaids, groomsmen, plus flowergirls and pageboys if you’re having them.
  • Buy bridal party accessories such as groomsmen’s ties, bridesmaids’ shoes, earrings, wraps and purses.
  • Write your vows if you’re not saying the traditional “I do” ones.
  • Set the date for your hens’ and buck’s nights and make sure your chief bridesmaid and best man have invited everyone you want to be there!
  • Speak to your celebrant/religious minister to ensure they will be lodging your Notice of Intended Marriage form at least one calendar month prior to your wedding day (a legal requirement to be married in Australia).
  • 1 month before

Meet with your celebrant/religious minister to run through the ceremony and finalise the order of service.
  • Print order of service booklets for the ceremony, then fold and tie with ribbon etc if required.
  • Buy bomboniere gifts (e.g. sugared almonds, chocolates) if you’re having them, and table decorations (e.g. tea lights) if doing them yourself.
  • Decide who will be speaking at the wedding and ensure each person knows their role – will they be making a speech, doing a toast or announcing the bridal party?
  • Start thinking about your own speech if you’re intending to make one. Write it now while you have plenty of time to put thought into it.
  • Ensure your groom has his suit organised – and those of his groomsmen too.
  • Go crazy on your hen’s night!
  • 1 week before

Phone or meet with the reception event coordinator to go over last details for the day. Confirm final numbers for catering purposes and table set-up.
  • Call each service or product provider to double-check they will be there at the right time, on the right day, and confirm exactly what they will be providing.
  • Type up a running sheet for the timing of the day to ensure it runs smoothly and doesn’t run over too much. Give a copy to the reception event coordinator as well as the MC.
  • Meet with your MC and go through the running sheet.
  • Do the table seating plan – who’s sitting next to whom?
  • Pack your bags for your honeymoon if you’re leaving the day after the wedding.
  • Write or print place cards for reception tables.
  • Pick up your wedding gown or have it delivered. Hang it somewhere safe where it won’t get crushed or seen by your groom!
  • Set out your whole outfit so you know you have absolutely everything to look like a princess. Try it on all together if you haven’t already at the dressmaker.
  • Have your rehearsal run-through at the ceremony venue and/or rehearsal dinner with bridal party and your families.
  • The day

Relax and enjoy the day – you’ve organised everything now so the only thing left to do is soak up the atmosphere and marry the man you love!
