The days are getting a little longer and warmer, and there’s plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Yes, spring is the perfect time of year to hit the hiking trail with the family. You’ll get some exercise, won’t get too sweaty, and the kids will love the incentive of walking to a destination such as a waterfall or lookout.

  • Convene a group of families join you with one of our spring invites. Then plan wisely – the bush can be dangerous if you set our unprepared. It’s important to walk in a group, stick to designated paths, and notify the appropriate authority of your route if it’s a longer walk. Also don’t choose a track that is beyond the fitness or ability levels of every member of the walking group.
  • You’ll need to carry items such as a first-aid kit, plenty of water and food, an adequate map, sunscreen, hats, rain gear, and insect repellant. Here are some more tips for bushwalking, and if you need ideas for where to bushwalk, head to your state or territory’s national parks organisation (for example, for NSW, head to National Parks and Wildlife Service. Get your sneakers on and ensure you choose a walk that is neither too long nor too steep for the kids – you want them to enjoy it, not complain that their legs are sore!
