Blooming beautiful – choosing your wedding flowers

There is nothing more stunning at a wedding than an abundance of fresh flowers, and if they have a beautiful scent, it adds to the ambience of the occasion too.

  • Here are a few tips to help you decide what blooms will feature on your big day:
  • *Choose flowers that are in season during the month you are getting married – this will save you a bundle as the flowers can be sourced locally and won’t need to be imported.
  • *Colour is a big consideration – if you’ve decided on your bridesmaids’ dress colour already, it can be helpful as you can then choose flowers to complement them (for example, chocolate dresses paired with pale pink roses). If you have your heart set on yellow tulips, you could incorporate touches of yellow into the rest of the wedding, such as the invitation (we have lots of gorgeous wedding e-invites featuring flowers).
  • *Classics such as roses, tulips and lilies are popular for wedding bouquets, and there are stacks of varieties from which to choose. But don’t dismiss other types of flowers that are less commonly featured in weddings yet still gorgeous – how about sophisticated magnolias, romantic hydrangeas, bright sunflowers, or old-fashioned daisies?
  • *If you like the idea of incorporating flowers with a special significance into your day, you can find out the meanings of some popular types here.
  • *When deciding on a florist, make sure you check out their portfolio of work, showing photos of bouquets and arrangements they have designed for real weddings. This way, you can assess the quality of their work. Also ask to see testimonials from previous bridal clients.
  • *You won’t just need bouquets and table arrangements. Also consider:
  • -button holes for the groom and groomsmen
  • -corsages for the mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom
  • -flower girl posies and page boy button holes
  • -individual blooms to decorate church pews/ceremony chairs
  • -a box of individual petals to scatter down the aisle
  • -arrangements for the ceremony location (these can be transported from ceremony to reception to save on cost)
  • -flowers to decorate your cake if you wish
  • Some florists will also prepare a small bouquet especially for you to throw to the single gals, so your own bouquet doesn’t end up getting trashed.
