5 great kids party games for 2 year olds

Got a 2 year old birthday party to organise and not sure about how to keep the little ones entertained? By running some simple and fun games you can ensure that the fun continues and hopefully avoid some of the dramas that can emerge with a touch of 2 year old boredom or tiredness!

  • Children in this age group benefit from simple and structured games with clear instructions. Games are always a highlight of a party and seeing toddlers participate can be a lot of fun for parents (and are great memories when captured on video or camera). Read below for some simple ideas to co-ordinate some kids party game favourites like Simon Says, dancing, musical statues, dress ups, treasure hunt and bubble catching. It’s important to remember that children in this age group are often difficult to co-ordinate so keeping things flowing and easy for them to join in and out of will bring you the best result! It is also advisable to award prizes for all children – all little ones should be winners in these games.
  • 1. Simon Says

Little ones love pointing out their tummy, their head, turning around in circles and rejoicing in their knowledge of their body parts. Pare the instructions right back to simply pointing to the body part – no dropping out, no tricking them with whether Simon has said to or not!
  • 2. Dancing and Musical Statues

Toddlers love dancing so having your iPod ready with a selection of favourites is always a smart idea. Organise the children together and involve them by leading with simple actions they can follow. You won’t go wrong with any popular nursery rhymes or a Wiggles compilation. You can add some extra fun to a dancing game by playing musical statues. Simply instruct the children that when the music stops they need to stand perfectly still.
  • 3. Dress Ups

Many 2 year olds are perfectly happy running around in a fun outfit, so you can easily out together a dress up box for the little ones to play with. No need to go out and buy expensive costumes, children will delight in simple things like old hats you have, bright plastic glasses, old tops and bags.
  • 4. Treasure Hunt

A few things to consider when organsing a treasure hunt – hide your prizes in obvious places so the kids can find them! Wrap items in bright paper so they grab their attention. Ensure you have plenty of back up prizes for those not fast enough to nab a prize for themselves. Encourage kids to collect the prizes and put them into a communal basket/box so prizes can then be distributed to everyone. Encourage parental involvement with this one if you can!
  • 5. Bubble catching

Bubbles are a wonderful way to distract and captivate children in this age group and can serve as a nice change of pace. Parents can help their children with blowing bubbles, or you can use one of these fantastic bubble machines to do the hard work for you.
  • Organising and running games with this age group can be very tiring for the host parents, especially when they’ve organised all of the other party elements. It’s a great idea to ask a friend who is wonderful with children or a local baby sitter who you know will be up to the task to pop in and help with the running of the games so you can keep your eye on the wider party, take photos etc.
